Winch Power Welcomes You
According to Answers.com, a winch is “A stationary motor-driven or hand-powered machine used for hoisting or hauling, having a drum around which is wound a rope or chain attached to the load being moved.” According to many hard working Americans, however, a winch is an essential piece of equipment to help them get their jobs done quickly and efficiently.
If you are a serious off-roader, or plan to be one someday, you’ll most likely want one of the toughest, most utilitarian pieces of equipment available: an electric winch. Many people use a winch that is mounted on the front of their truck, jeep, or ATV to pull themselves out of a place where their vehicle is stuck and otherwise wouldn’t be able to move. Many an amateur 4-wheel drive enthusiast has been saved the embarrassment of having to call a tow truck while off-roading in unfamiliar terrain.
But winches aren’t limited to personal rescue operations. Many outdoorsman use a winch to pull other things that they need to move – things that would be difficult or even impossible for even a team of strong men. For instance, you could use a winch to pull another vehicle out of a ditch, or to pull a fallen tree out of a backyard. Many boat owners use winches to pull their boats from the water and onto a trailer when they have no one else available at the time to help.
When shopping for a winch, the most important features to look for are
• The size of the drum
• The strength of the motor
• The size and length of the cable
…and, of course, the price of the winch and other parts/features you many need to mount and maintain it. Before purchasing a winch, however, consider what you intend to pull. If it’s your own vehicle, make sure you get one powerful enough not only for your vehicle, but also any cargo or gear you might be carrying with you at the time.

Can a powerful winch come in handy for you? Here’s what one thankful winch owner had to say…
“My winch saved me and a hummer when we got stuck in deep snow in Big Bear. We were in big trouble. It took everything we had, a hi-lift jack, two 20′ straps and 125′ of line to reach a tree. It still took 6 hours to get out but we made it. I learned a lesson that day…”
The old adage is true: when it comes to winches, it is much better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.
